Hautū Waka is a navigational framework grounded in mātauranga Māori and can be used as a tool to help navigate complexity.

Our role in this project was to create digital illustrations that visually represent the Hautū Waka methodology. This involved interpreting the phases of the framework and translating them into fresh, eye catching and culturally meaningful imagery. Our illustrations aimed to encapsulate the essence of each phase, making the matauranga of the framework relevant within a modern context.

The Hautū Waka framework is divided into several phases, each with its own unique focus and purpose:

Whakariterite (Preparing the Waka): Illustrations here depict the preparation of the crew and resources, aligning purpose and identifying necessary skills and resources for the journey.

Te Rapunga (Venturing into the Unknown): This artwork captures the essence of drawing on past experiences and the infinite potential of collective knowledge, highlighting the importance of noticing tohu (signs) that guide towards common aspirations.

Te Kitenga (Sighting Tohu): The illustrations for this phase focus on attuning to the present, noticing and acknowledging tohu from different perspectives within the collective knowledge.

Te Whāinga (Setting the Journey Path): This phase's artwork delves into researching and exploring tohu, testing the waters and taking a closer look to set the journey's path.

Te Whiwhinga (A Closer Look at Tohu): The illustrations here represent the clarity of tohu and the setting of a course towards the collective vision, emphasizing the work that needs to be done.

Te Rawenga (Collect, Reflect, Acknowledge Tohu): The final phase's artwork celebrates, reflects, and acknowledges the tohu from the journey, serving as a guide for others.
