🎨🌟 New House designs for Māruawai College! 🌟🎨
We’re thrilled to share the four new house logos we had the honor of designing for Māruawai College. Each design celebrates the unique identity and deep-rooted values of each house through colors, patterns, and symbols that represent their namesakes.
✨ WAIMEHA | Gold (Kōura)
Inspired by the Waimea Plains, this logo features koru patterns symbolizing the natural rhythm of the land. The sun, like the gold in Māruawai College’s tohu, embodies the aspiration for students to shine brightly and radiate their potential.
🔥 TUTURAU | Red (Whero)
Representing heritage and strength, Tuturau’s logo features carvings of ancestors and a taiaha, a symbol of leadership and courage. The statue represents the spirit of protection and triumph for all.
💧 MATAURA | Blue (Kahurangi)
With Mataura and Clutha rivers as inspiration, this blue design emphasizes the importance of water in sustaining life and honoring connections to the land. The kanakana and hinaki shapes symbolize abundance, while the koiri pattern invites reflection and growth.
🌿 HOKONUI | Green (Kākāriki)
Reflecting the Hokonui Hills, the niho taniwha pattern honors Chief Te Rakitauneke’s mokomoko, Matamata, who is said to have formed these hills. This design connects the house to strength and resilience.
Each logo is a tribute to Māruawai College's values and heritage, and we’re proud to have brought these stories to life in the designs. Looking forward to seeing these house logos inspire students to celebrate their roots and shine brightly in their journey ahead! 🌄👣

We are excited to present this mahi: an artwork created in collaboration with University of Canterbury PhD researcher, Megan Eustace. ✨🎨
Megan’s research into over 300 whakataukī, whakatauākī, and pepeha unveils ancestral wisdom on communication within te ao Māori. 🌀📜
This three-panel piece brings these insights to life, celebrating the interconnectedness of the spiritual, physical, and natural realms. 🌿
Left Panel:
• Pīwaiwaka (fantail): Messenger between the spiritual and physical worlds.
• Poutama design: Pursuit of knowledge and spiritual growth. 🌌
Middle Panel:
• Tui: Embodies eloquence in speaking.
• Rauponga pattern: Honors whakapapa and oral traditions. 🎶
Te Taiao (Right Panel):
• Kiwi: Symbol of courage and selflessness.
• Niho Taniwha pattern: Connects us to our maunga and awa, reflecting our bond with te taiao. 🗻🌊
At the center, a carved figure from three angles represents a speaker drawing wisdom from all realms, holding a tokotoko—symbolizing a rangatira adorned with mataora. 🗣️👑
Colours: Inspired by Te Kara—the National Māori Flag—we embrace:
• Black for Te Korekore (realm of potential being).
• White for Te Ao Mārama (realm of light and existence).
• Red for Te Whai Ao (coming into being). 🖤🤍❤️
Ka mihi nui ki a Megan. We’re honored to support her work developing kaupapa Māori speech and language therapy for whānau living with mate wareware (dementia). ❤️🧠
🌬️ Mauri ora!

Mahinga kai refers to the traditional Māori food gathering practices and the areas where these activities take place. This concept encompasses not just the physical act of collecting food but also the spiritual, social, and cultural elements that come with it. 🌱👥🙏
-
Last year, we worked with @Hokonui Runanga to create some toi for the Gore District Council. The aim was to represent Hokonui whānau's distinct food-gathering practices and present this within Gore District Council's brand-new library. 📚🖌️

Each piece of artwork signifies a different realm within the Taiao. 🌿🌊🔥 Various motifs represent the prominent beings and elements within that realm. The rings that flow from one artwork to the next symbolise the interconnectedness of these natural realms. 🔄💫

Link Alliance Social Procurement Report 2023
.
For the "Link Alliance Social Procurement Report 2023," Tuatahi Creatives was tasked with creating a graphic design that encapsulated the essence of Link Alliance's commitment to social procurement. Energy Hardship: The challenges
and a way forward.
.
The Energy Hardship Expert Panel undertook an important project to contribute to the national conversation on energy hardship in Aotearoa.
.
The panel was commissioned by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) to provide comprehensive recommendations to the government, aimed at addressing and alleviating energy hardship across the nation. This mahi was provided in a report titled "Te Kore, Te Pō, Te Ao Mārama” which was a culmination of 14 months of dedicated work from the panel, involving extensive engagement with whānau, communities, energy, health, and social services experts, as well as NGOs.
.
Tuatahi was selected by the panel to design the report ensuring the final product was not only informative but visually compelling and culturally authentic.
We were entrusted by Waikato Tanui with the graphic design for the "Waikato Tainui Social Procurement Guide." This guide was pivotal in promoting the growth and prosperity of Waikato Tainui, aligning with their vision "Kia tupu, kia hua, kia puaawai." Our role was to visually communicate this vision and the guide's strategic goals created by Puna Awarau.
The guide, released in September 2023, outlines Waikato Tainui Group's commitment to using procurement to create social, cultural, economic, and environmental benefits. It defines social procurement as leveraging collective buying power to generate broader value and provides actionable steps for achieving socio-economic objectives.
Our design approach integrated traditional Māori elements, reflecting the guide's focus on mātauranga Māori and supporting Waikato Tainui and Māori-owned businesses. We ensured the layout was both accessible and culturally resonant, facilitating easy navigation through its sections on objectives, roles, responsibilities, and procurement strategies.
