Mahakōwai o Waiāranga

Long ago, lived the kuia Mahakōwai. She made her home in a paranaki made of tōtara and harakeke near Te Matā river. Nanny was given her name Mahakōwai because she was renowned for her love of nature and her love of Muscovy ducks.
